This is a story about how not to sell a car. I went to this small, independent, used car dealership in a shady area of St. Louis (sounds great already, doesn't it). I had been wanting to test drive an Audi TT to see if I would like a car that was so small and impractical. I called ahead and let them know I was coming to test drive the Audi TT. Upon my arrival, I was met by the man I spoke to on the phone (we'll call him Ray). Even though I had made an appointment of sorts, Ray was not prepared with any of the paperwork. An older man, Ray couldn't even find the keys to the car I wanted to drive. He kept on badgering me as to my interests in the car. I was upfront with him and told him I really liked the way the car looked, but I have never driven one and I didn't know what I was going to think until I drove it. After finally getting things squared away, we went out to the car...and the car wouldn't start (a great sign if there ever was one). I had to go back inside while the people at the place gave it a jump start.
The car drove ok, but if I do get something like that, I"m going to have to get used to a much smaller car. Even before we left, I told Ray I really liked the looks of a white BMW on the lot. I wanted to test drive that, but by the time we got back to the lot, the plates magically had disappeared that we were using and we were unable to take it off the lot. I'm happy to say the BMW did start however, and I enjoyed sitting in it while in the parking lot.
